CBSE Class 10 Chemistry Chapter 1 - Chemical Reactions and Equations Exercise 5

Translate the following statements into chemical equations and then balance them.

(a) Hydrogen gas combines with nitrogen to form ammonia.

(b) Hydrogen sulphide gas burns in air to give water and sulpur dioxide.

(c) Barium chloride reacts with aluminium sulphate to give aluminium chloride and a precipitate of barium sulphate.

(d) Potassium metal reacts with water to give potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas

(a) Hydrogen gas combines with nitrogen to form ammonia

Word equation: Hydrogen + Nitrogen → Ammonia

Unbalanced equation: H₂ + N₂ → NH₃

Balanced equation: 3H₂ + N₂ → 2NH₃

Balancing check:

  • Left side: 6 H atoms, 2 N atoms
  • Right side: 6 H atoms, 2 N atoms ✓

(b) Hydrogen sulphide gas burns in air to give water and sulphur dioxide

Word equation: Hydrogen sulphide + Oxygen → Water + Sulphur dioxide

Unbalanced equation: H₂S + O₂ → H₂O + SO₂

Balanced equation: 2H₂S + 3O₂ → 2H₂O + 2SO₂

Balancing check:

  • Left side: 4 H atoms, 2 S atoms, 6 O atoms
  • Right side: 4 H atoms, 2 S atoms, 6 O atoms ✓

(c) Barium chloride reacts with aluminium sulphate to give aluminium chloride and a precipitate of barium sulphate

Word equation: Barium chloride + Aluminium sulphate → Aluminium chloride + Barium sulphate

Unbalanced equation: BaCl₂ + Al₂(SO₄)₃ → AlCl₃ + BaSO₄

Balanced equation: 3BaCl₂ + Al₂(SO₄)₃ → 2AlCl₃ + 3BaSO₄

Balancing check:

  • Left side: 3 Ba atoms, 6 Cl atoms, 2 Al atoms, 3 S atoms, 12 O atoms
  • Right side: 3 Ba atoms, 6 Cl atoms, 2 Al atoms, 3 S atoms, 12 O atoms ✓

(d) Potassium metal reacts with water to give potassium hydroxide and hydrogen gas

Word equation: Potassium + Water → Potassium hydroxide + Hydrogen

Unbalanced equation: K + H₂O → KOH + H₂

Balanced equation: 2K + 2H₂O → 2KOH + H₂

Balancing check:

  • Left side: 2 K atoms, 4 H atoms, 2 O atoms
  • Right side: 2 K atoms, 4 H atoms, 2 O atoms ✓
